4D Pioneering Translational Medicine
Putting translational medicine into practice means creating the framework in which academic, clinical and industrial partners can come together.
This can be done at different scales.
At the top end, it might mean as for example in Scotland where we advised on the groundbreaking £50m TMRI, putting together 4 NHS Trusts, 4 Universities, Government and a major industrial partner (Wyeth) to create a hub and spoke 'translational discovery engine' with a core pharmacogenomics biomarker discovery lab linked to 4 hospital spokes where biomarkers are validated in clinical studies.
At a more local level it might mean a fundamental collaboration between a Hospital and University such as in Leeds, or around UCL's N London campus to create the 'UCL Academic Health Science Partnership', in which academic and clinical researchers work much more closely under a central strategy to focus their research more on key diseases.
At the smaller scale it means within a hospital re-organising facilities to encourage more 'clinical science' and clinical scientists - even in a DGH which may not have a particularly strong research base, recognising and harnessing the power of the high patient turnover and data derived insights.
The 4D Biomedical team has worked on a number of the leading translational projects and partnerships in the UK.
